Rose Oil

For hundreds of years rose has been widely recognized as a symbol of love, sympathy or sorrow. We know that they are also used in perfumes because of the scent they give off. Rose oils are perhaps the most widely used essential oil in perfumery.

Rose oil is a light yellow, viscous oil that is made by steam distillation from the flower petals of two rose species. There are over 100 species of the rose plant but the two rose species used in the production of rose oil are Rosa x damascena and Rosa centifolia. Rose oil is also known as Rose Otto or Rose Essence.

There is also Rose absolute, which is a red-brown liquid with an adherent, sweet rose-like odour. Rose absolute is produced by solvent extraction of flowers of the rose species Rosa centifolia. This is the rose used in perfumery.

Most of the rose oil sold in shops and online for home use and aromatherapy are so expensive and this is because it takes about 2500 rose petals to get 1ml of Rose essential oil

According to aromatherapy specialists, when your skin absorbs essential oils, messages are transmitted to the sector of the brain responsible for controlling emotions and it is believed that these messages affect some factors such as our breathing, stress levels, blood pressure and heart rate.


Uses of Rose Essential Oil

It is known that rose oil is used in skincare products and makeup products for its scent and benefits so here are some benefits of Rose essential oil.

1. Hydrates the skin and hair

Rose oil to pull moisture from the air to hydrate the skin and the hair as well and because it does this effortlessly, it helps even the skin tone and improve skin complexion.

Also, Rose oil makes the skin more permeable and this allows for more nutrients to be absorbed by the skin. This is why rose water is great as a Toner or facial spray as they are used before any skin treatments, serums and moisturisers

Due to the hydration, rose oil gives the skin this instant glow and smoothness and this comes in handy when applying makeup. Applying any form of Rose oil before makeup application preps the skin so the product you apply on top lasts longer

2. Treats wounds and acne

According to a 2010 study, Rose essential oil is a very strong antibacterial and antifungal. Apart from its sweet aroma, This is why rose oil is used as an ingredient in skincare products to help treat acne.

3. Reduces anxiety, stress and high blood pressure

This is where aromatherapy comes in. Massaging rose oil into the skin transmits messages to the brain and these messages tell the brain to secrete oxytocin from the pituitary gland. Oxytocin is a natural stress reliever. It diminishes anxiety and induces relaxation. Oxytocin is associated with lower blood pressure and heart rate.

4. Increases Libido

As rose oil works against anxiety and stress by sending signals to the brain to release oxytocin, it also works for your libido as it releases the right amount of oxytocin and raises your sex drive.

5. Reduces Menstrual Pain

Rose oil mixed with some lavender, cinnamon and almond oil can be used for abdominal massage in reducing the severity of menstrual pain. In a study published in 2013, scientists found that women who had an abdominal massage once daily for a week priori to menstruation using the oil mix experienced less pain compared to women who received a massage with almond oil alone

Another study in 2015 found that women who applied aromatherapy self massage using rose oil had less menstrual pain by the second cycle compared to those who did self massage with almond oil or had no treatment at all.

How to use rose oil

Make rose water

Mix 6 drops of rose oil into 120ml of distilled water or boiled filtered water. You can use this as a facial spray or toner for the skin as well as a hydrant for the hair.

Make rose oil bath

Mix rose oil with a carrier oil(almond, coconut, jojoba) and add it to a warm bath tub of water

For aromatherapy

Mix rose oil with a carrier oil, preferably almond oil and massage your temples, neck, wrist and chest. You could also inhale rose oil by using a diffuser mixed with some water.

As a perfume

Dab some on your clothes for a sweet rosy smell.

Rose oil, like any other essential oil are sold in high concentration so be careful when inhaling it. Also, when you dab some on your clothes, be careful not to put too much and it is best to always mix with a carrier oil before use.
